How to convert HEIC to JPG

HEIC (also called HEIF) is the format iPhones have saved photos in by default since iOS 11. It compresses better than JPG at the same quality, but plenty of software still can't open it — a photo that looks fine on your phone can show up as a blank icon on a Windows PC, an older Android device, or an upload form that only accepts JPG.

Why HEIC breaks so often

HEIC is a relatively recent, patent-encumbered format, and support for it outside Apple's own ecosystem is inconsistent. Websites, older editing tools, and many upload forms simply don't decode it, so the file either fails outright or arrives as an unreadable placeholder.

Decode it in your browser

Open Convert and drop in a .heic or .heif file. PiqPair decodes HEIC input directly in your browser before anything reaches the server — this decoding step is a Pro feature, since it's more work than a plain format swap between already-common formats.

Pick JPG, PNG or WebP

Once decoded, Convert treats the photo like any other source image: choose JPG for maximum compatibility, PNG if you need transparency, or WebP for a smaller file that still displays in every modern browser. A quality slider and lossless WebP option are available alongside a background colour picker for flattening transparency onto JPG.

Converting more than one at a time

Convert accepts a batch of files at once, so a folder of HEIC photos from a phone backup can go through in one pass rather than one at a time, subject to your account's batch and file-size limits.

Questions

Why won't my iPhone photo open on my computer?

It's likely saved as HEIC, the format iPhones use by default since iOS 11. Many non-Apple programs and upload forms don't support it, which is why converting to JPG first fixes the problem.

Is converting HEIC to JPG free?

HEIC input is a Pro feature — decoding it in the browser is more involved than converting between formats every browser already understands. Converting between PNG, JPG, WebP and AVIF is free.

Does converting HEIC to JPG upload my photo?

The HEIC file is decoded locally in your browser first; the resulting image data is then sent for conversion the same way any other Convert job is, processed in memory and never stored.

Can I convert HEIC to PNG or WebP instead of JPG?

Yes. Once decoded, the source image can be converted to PNG, JPG or WebP, whichever suits where you're sharing it.
